The mesmerising quality of dichroic is captured in this colour shifting butterfly mirror. Reflecting the world in a warm glow it also functions as anti-depressant. Shapes determined by recycled car window glass shape and size.
Made of recycled car windows fitted with dichroic film and fixed to a bespoke wall mounted hinge, the angle of the butterfly wings can be adjusted to reflect the varying dichroic colours that depend on the light angle of incidence.
The shapes are curved so they unfurl from the wall letting the reflected light escape. The softness of the fluorescent felt lining references the inside treatment of medieval armour.
The colour reflecting shadow makes the wall glow, giving the impression of a light source hidden behind the wall sconce.
The Water Moon reflection resembles a giant moon or sun with popping ‘sunspot’ bubbles. In this image with narrowbeam spotlight creating the reflection on the wall
The Water Moon reflection created with sunlight. The reflected image travelling across the wall and ceiling follows the path of the sun.
Surprising reflections are made by these ‘fly on the wall’ objects using reclaimed car mirrors.
The car mirror mounting system allows the mirrors to be angled to reflect that part of the space you choose.

We always see ourselves reflected in our surroundings. In this installation the mirror surface is ‘broken’ when the light inside is switched on and you can see beyond yourself into the natural world beyond. Materials glass, mirror foil, LED light, plants
Corner piece plays with our visual understanding of space by defining space with a void. Materials metal base with wooden sculpture. Height 1.6m total
Water Moon & Mirror Flower is an art installation that combines light and sound. The opening at Studio BloemDwars, planned for the winter solstice, 21 December 2020, coincided with the Covid-19 lockdown in Amsterdam.
The lensing of the water caused by controlled droplets is projected on the walls of the gallery with tiny spotlights. The sound of the water droplets is recorded by underwater microphones and processed to match the dynamic patterns reflected by the lights on the walls.
With one Water Moon and four Mirror Flowers the result is an orchestration of light and sound. The effect of the dynamic light patterns with the soundscape is calming and hypnotic. The soundscape designed and programmed by Adam Foxwell captures the light movements perfectly.
Mirror Flower consists of four individual pieces, the light reflection on the wall references a mountain range with northern lights shooting across the sky above in ever changing patterns.
